In rural Siberia, Utah, a local farmer decided to make his house more in line with 21st century technology when his granddaughter moved in with him. With this granddaughter’s assistance, he purchased an Alexa, Ring doorbell, and smart laundry appliances.

The farmer, Ned Constantine, and his granddaughter, April, enjoyed the ability to connect and control their devices and home from their barn and fields. All was going well for several months until the unusual began to creep into their lives.

“It began with the Ring Cam,” said April Constantine, “a voice started talking to me when I was on the porch, resting at the end of the day.” Ms. Constantine routinely enjoyed drinking tea or lemonade on the porch, but one evening took a turn for the strange when the Ring Cam began to seemingly malfunction.

A woman’s voice through the device began to communicate with the family regularly. At first, the woman asked for help and expressed her loneliness. April tried to ignore the voice, and after reporting the issues to the manufacturer, they found that it was not a malfunction or connection issue.

For generations, the family has sensed a presence in the kitchen of the antiquated home. Ned Constantine’s great-grandparents built the home on the acreage that once was a mission chapel during the push for revival in Utah after the gold rush. Eventually, the Constantine’s began to ask questions of the voice and found that the once-quiet presence had now found a method to reach out to the family.

“My name is Lucina Rae, and I was a servant for the religious order that was once on this land. They claimed I was a witch, and I was hanged on this land. I have been here since. It has been so freeing and a relief to find a family to serve again,” said the disembodied voice from the Ring Cam during our interview.

The ghost of Lucinda Rae has now become a member of the Constantine family and works alongside them on the farm through the devices installed. She routinely presents them with recipes to try on the Alexa, finds new music and jokes through the Echo, restarts the clothes dryer if the contents are still damp, and even now vacuums with a Roomba.

“We are so greatful Lucinda is in our lives! She is not just a great help, but a wonderful host when we have relatives and friends over,” smiled Mr. Constantine.

With this development, tech companies are not evaluating if this use of devices can be more widespread, if hauntings and possessions can be transported through system, and what other ways this can be of use to still-living humans.

Another unexpected development is the line of hopeful people now streaming into Siberia, Utah looking for Lucinda Rae to help with connect with their deceased loved ones.
